Does the difference change during the year?

No. New York and Denver both change their clocks, on the same dates and in the same direction, so the gap of 2 hours holds all year.

On the change nights themselves the two sides do not switch at the same instant. Each changes at its own local time, so for 2 hours in the early hours the gap between the local clocks is different: 3 h on Mar 14 and 1 h on Nov 7, 2027. That matters only for events scheduled in the middle of the night.

Converting EST to MST by hand

Where the EST and MST working days overlap

Two 9:00–17:00 days share 6 hours: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, which is 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM MST.

What EST and MST mean

Eastern Standard Time

EST is UTC−5. The US East Coast and eastern Canada (New York, Washington, Miami, Toronto, Montreal) use it only in winter; from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November they are on EDT, UTC−4. Jamaica, Panama and Cancún keep it all year, and since 2026 so does Manitoba (Winnipeg).

Mountain Standard Time

MST is UTC−7: winter time in Denver and Salt Lake City, and all-year time in most of Arizona (Phoenix), Sonora and Yukon. British Columbia also stays on UTC−7 all year since 2026, so Vancouver now keeps MST through the winter.
