How to read 1600
1600 is after noon, so subtract 12 from the hours: 16 − 12 = 4. Keep the minutes (00) and add PM: 4:00 PM.
For hours 13 to 19, ignore the 1 and take 2 from the second digit: 16 gives 6 − 2 = 4, PM.
1600 falls in the afternoon: 16 hours after midnight, 66.7% of the way through the day, with 8 hours left until the next midnight.
How to say it
Pilots and air traffic controllers say each digit: “one six zero zero”. Off the radio, people usually read 1600 as two numbers.
