How many weeks are in a year?
52 weeks and 1 day
A common year has 365 days: 52 weeks and 1 day. A leap year has 366 days: 52 weeks and 2 days. In ISO 8601 week numbering a year has 52 or 53 numbered weeks.

Years at a glance
Each row is computed from the Gregorian calendar. The ISO column is the number of ISO 8601 weeks; “53 times” names the weekdays that occur 53 times in that year, which is what decides whether a weekly payroll has 52 or 53 paydays.

Why a year is 52 weeks and a bit
The week and the year have nothing to do with each other. The year follows the seasons, and the Gregorian calendar approximates it with 365 days in common years and 366 in leap years. The seven-day week runs on without a break, independent of months and years. Since 52 × 7 = 364, a common year is one day longer than 52 weeks and a leap year two days longer. As a decimal, that is 365 ÷ 7 = 52.143 weeks, or 366 ÷ 7 = 52.286. Over the full 400-year Gregorian cycle the average year is 365.2425 days, or 52.1775 weeks.
That leftover day is why every date moves forward one weekday each year, and two after a February 29. July 4 falls on a Saturday in 2026, a Sunday in 2027, a Tuesday in 2028, a Wednesday in 2029 and a Thursday in 2030. It is also why calendars repeat only now and then: 2026 uses the same calendar as 2037, 2043 and 2054, the next years that start on the same weekday and have the same leap status. The whole Gregorian calendar repeats every 400 years. That cycle has 146,097 days, exactly 20,871 weeks, so every cycle starts on the same weekday.
ISO 8601: years with 52 or 53 weeks
Week numbers are where the answer becomes “52 or 53”. The international standard, ISO 8601, defines weeks that start on Monday. Week 1 of a year is the week that contains the year’s first Thursday, which is the same as the week that contains January 4, and the same as the first week with at least four days in the new year. Every week belongs wholly to one year, so the days at the very start or end of December and January can belong to the neighbouring year.
A year gets a 53rd week when one more Thursday fits in. That happens when January 1 is a Thursday, or when the year is a leap year and January 1 is a Wednesday. That is 71 of every 400 years, spaced 5 or 6 years apart. Between 2000 and 2100 these are the years with 53 ISO weeks:

- 2009
- 2015

Two examples show the year boundary at work. Monday, December 29, 2025 is already 2026-W01-1, the first day of week 1 of 2026. And Friday, January 1, 2027 is still 2026-W53-5: week 53 of 2026, which ends on Sunday, January 3. A date’s week-numbering year is therefore not always its calendar year. Software has to use the ISO week-year (often written GGGG, %G or YYYY in format patterns) next to the week number, never the calendar year. Spreadsheets keep the two systems apart as well: in Excel, ISOWEEKNUM gives the ISO week and WEEKNUM the Sunday-start count. This week’s number shows both for today.
US-style week numbers: 53 or 54
In the United States, calendars and many business systems number weeks differently. Weeks start on Sunday, and week 1 is the week that contains January 1, however few days of the new year it has. This is a convention, recorded in the Unicode CLDR locale data that most software uses, not a law. Because the first and last weeks are usually partial, a year always reaches week 53. It reaches week 54 when a leap year starts on a Saturday: January 1 then sits alone in week 1 and December 31, a Sunday, opens week 54. Between 2000 and 2100 that happens in 2000, 2028, 2056, 2084.
The two systems start weeks on different days and count week 1 differently, so the same date often carries two different numbers. In 2026 the ISO and US numbers are the same on 313 of its 365 days. In 2027 the ISO and US numbers are the same on none of its 365 days, because January 1 falls in a week the ISO system gives to the previous year and the US count runs ahead all year. When a schedule, a timesheet and a spreadsheet disagree about “week 45”, check which system each one uses before anything else.
Weeks in each month
No month except February is a whole number of weeks. The leftover days decide which weekdays occur five times in the month. In a 31-day month, three weekdays occur five times. In a 30-day month two do, and in a leap-year February one does. The table holds for every year; only February changes in a leap year.
| Month | Days | Weeks and days | Weeks (decimal) | Weekdays occurring 5 times |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| February | 28 (29 in a leap year) | 4 weeks (4 weeks and 1 day) | 4.00 (4.14) | None (one in a leap year) |
| March | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| April | 30 | 4 weeks and 2 days | 4.29 | 2, which ones depends on the year |
| May | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| June | 30 | 4 weeks and 2 days | 4.29 | 2, which ones depends on the year |
| July | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| August | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| September | 30 | 4 weeks and 2 days | 4.29 | 2, which ones depends on the year |
| October | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
| November | 30 | 4 weeks and 2 days | 4.29 | 2, which ones depends on the year |
| December | 31 | 4 weeks and 3 days | 4.43 | 3, which ones depends on the year |
On a wall calendar a month needs five rows, sometimes six. A 31-day month needs six when it starts on the last or second-to-last day of the calendar’s week. Only February can fit in four rows, and only in a common year that starts the month on the calendar’s first weekday. On a Sunday-first calendar that happens in 2026, 2037, 2043, 2054. On a Monday-first calendar it happens in 2027, 2038, 2049, 2055. The average month is 4.35 weeks long.
Work weeks, pay periods and hours
A year has 52 Monday-to-Friday weeks plus the one or two leftover days, so it has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays. A common year has 261 when it starts on a weekday and 260 when it starts on a Saturday or Sunday. A leap year has two leftover days, the weekdays of January 1 and 2. It has 262 when it starts on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (2004, 2008, 2020, 2024, 2032, 2036 in this century), 261 when it starts on a Friday or Sunday, and 260 when it starts on a Saturday. Years with 260 since 2000 include 2000, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2017, 2022. Public holidays then reduce the count. They differ by country and sometimes by region, so the totals here do not subtract them.
Payroll follows the same arithmetic. A weekly payroll has 52 paydays, or 53 when its payday is one of the weekdays that occur 53 times. In 2026 that is every Thursday, because the year starts on a Thursday. A biweekly payroll normally has 26 paydays, because 26 periods are 364 days. It gets a 27th when the year’s first payday falls on January 1, or on January 1 or 2 in a leap year. A salary divided by 26 therefore overpays in those years unless the employer divides by 27. Semimonthly pay (24 periods) and monthly pay (12) do not depend on weekdays at all.
In hours, a common year has 8,760 hours and a leap year 8,784. A full-time year is often taken as 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). The weekdays of an actual year come to a little more: 2026 has 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day.
This year so far
Today, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is day 307 of 2026. Counting today, 43 weeks and 6 days of the year are done and 8 weeks and 2 days remain. By ISO numbering it is week 45 of the 53 weeks of 2026; the US count makes it week 45. These figures change at midnight in your time zone, America/New_York.
