- Next clock change: November 7, 2027. Los Angeles moves to PST (UTC−8), so UTC is then 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles.
PST to UTC for every hour
Each UTC column holds for part of the year (dates in the header for 2027). The first uses the fixed offset (PST UTC−8); the others give local clock time when daylight saving time changes the gap. From 4:00 PM PST, UTC is already on the next calendar day. The dot marks the current PST hour.

Does the difference change during the year?
As written, no: PST is always UTC−8, so the gap is 8 hours on every date. But Los Angeles uses PST only in winter, and people often keep writing “PST” when they mean the local time. Between the local clock in Los Angeles and UTC, the gap is 8 hours or 7 hours:
| From | What changes | Los Angeles | UTC | UTC vs PST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 1 | Start of the year | PST (UTC−8) | UTC (UTC+0) | +8 h |
| March 8 | Los Angeles moves to PDT (UTC−7) | PDT (UTC−7) | UTC (UTC+0) | +7 h |
| November 1 | Los Angeles moves to PST (UTC−8) | PST (UTC−8) | UTC (UTC+0) | +8 h |
| From | What changes | Los Angeles | UTC | UTC vs PST |

| March 14 | Los Angeles moves to PDT (UTC−7) | PDT (UTC−7) | UTC (UTC+0) | +7 h |
| November 7 | Los Angeles moves to PST (UTC−8) | PST (UTC−8) | UTC (UTC+0) | +8 h |
Converting PST to UTC by hand
With the fixed offsets, add 8 hours: 3:30 PM PST is 11:30 PM UTC.
With the +7 h gap (Mar 14 – Nov 7), add 7 hours: 3:30 PM PST is 10:30 PM UTC.
Going back from UTC to PST, do the opposite: the UTC to PST page has its own table.
Reading a UTC timestamp as PST time
Logs, APIs and flight plans usually carry UTC. A timestamp ending in Z is UTC, and one ending in an offset already says how far from UTC it is. These two name the same moment:
2027-01-15T20:00:00Z2027-01-15T12:00:00-08:00
The offset in the second form is the one in force on that date (January 15, 2027). A program should store the UTC form and apply the right offset when it displays the time, rather than storing a local time and hoping the offset is still the same.
What PST and UTC mean
Pacific Standard Time
PST is UTC−8: winter time in California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada (and Baja California). British Columbia no longer uses it: since 2026 Vancouver stays on UTC−7 all year.
PST can also mean Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8, the Philippines). This page uses Pacific Standard Time, the meaning people searching for this conversion have in mind. For another one, type the city into the time zone converter.
Coordinated Universal Time
UTC is the world’s reference time. It has no daylight saving time and no seasons: every UTC offset you see (UTC−5, UTC+5:30) is measured from it.
