About Africa/Khartoum
Africa/Khartoum is the IANA time zone for Sudan. It currently keeps Central Africa Time (CAT, UTC+2) all year.
Its principal location is Khartoum at 15.60° N, 32.53° E.
Abbreviations in use: CAT. Offset page: UTC+2.
Rule for future years (POSIX TZ string)
CAT-2
The standard time is called CAT and is UTC+2. POSIX writes the offset with the opposite sign (west of Greenwich is positive), which is why the string says "-2". There is no daylight saving rule: the zone stays on this offset for every year after the end of its explicit transitions. Software that has no full tzdata copy, such as many embedded devices, can use this string directly as the TZ environment variable.
History of Africa/Khartoum since 1970
The record starts with local mean time (UTC+2:10), which ended on December 31, 1930. The first daylight saving time in the record is in 1970.
| Years | Clocks | Abbreviations |
|---|---|---|
| 1970–1985 | UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 in summer | CAT, CAST |
| 1986–1999 | UTC+2 all year | CAT |
| 2000 | UTC+2 until January 15, then UTC+3 | CAT, EAT |
| 2001–2016 | UTC+3 all year | EAT |
| 2017 | UTC+3 until November 1, then UTC+2 | EAT, CAT |
| 2018 onward | UTC+2 all year | CAT |
Before 1970
1 offset change before 1970 in the record:
- Wednesday, December 31, 1930: UTC+2:10 → UTC+2 (CAT)
Changes of the winter (standard) offset: Saturday, January 15, 2000, UTC+2 → UTC+3; Wednesday, November 1, 2017, UTC+3 → UTC+2.
tzdata commits to accuracy from 1970 for every zone (zone1970.tab); earlier entries are historical research and may be incomplete.

Using Africa/Khartoum in code
Every major platform reads the same IANA ID. Store instants in UTC and convert with the ID at display time; never store a fixed offset for a place that has daylight saving time.
