How business days are counted
A business day is a day on which businesses normally work: Monday to Friday in most of the world, minus public holidays. “N business days from today” starts counting with the next business day and steps over every weekend day and holiday until N working days have passed. Today itself is never counted, even when it is a working day, so 1 business day from a Monday is Tuesday and 1 business day from a Friday is the following Monday.
Because two of every seven days are skipped, business days stretch further than calendar days: 5 business days are a full calendar week, 10 are two weeks, and 30 business days are six weeks, or more if holidays fall in between. Skipping weekends only, 30 business days from today is Tuesday, December 15, 2026.
Holidays make the difference
Weekends are the same for everyone in a country, but public holidays are not the same everywhere, and they move the answer. A worked example: 10 business days from Friday, December 18, 2026.
- Weekends only: Friday, January 1, 2027.
- With US federal holidays (Christmas Day on Friday the 25th and New Year’s Day on Friday the 1st): Tuesday, January 5, 2027.
- With England and Wales bank holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day observed on Monday the 28th, New Year’s Day): Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
The calculator holds the national public holidays of 18 countries and states, taken from official government lists for 2026 to 2028: United States (federal), Canada (federal), England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Australia (national days), New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, New Zealand (national days), South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, France (national days), Spain (national days), Germany (federal day only). Where the law moves a holiday that falls on a weekend to a weekday (the US “observed” day, UK substitute bank holidays, Mondayised holidays in New Zealand and Australia), the substitute weekday is skipped. Outside the covered years, the count skips weekends only and says so.
Weekends differ between countries
Saturday and Sunday is the most common weekend, but not the only one. In Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and several other countries the weekend is Friday and Saturday, and the working week runs Sunday to Thursday; Afghanistan’s weekend is Thursday and Friday, and Iran’s is Friday (Unicode CLDR week data). The calculator’s Weekend menu covers these, and starts with the one for your time zone.
Reading a business-day deadline
- Cut-off times. Many businesses count a request received after a daily cut-off, or on a weekend, as received on the next business day. Then the count starts one business day later.
- Whose holidays. A shipment between two countries can be delayed by holidays in either. A bank transfer usually follows the banking days of the currency’s country.
- Court and statutory deadlines have their own counting rules, often in calendar days with a weekend or holiday extension at the end rather than business days. Check the rule that sets your deadline; this calculator counts, it does not interpret law.
Business days in spreadsheets
=WORKDAY(TODAY(),30) in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice returns the date 30 business days from today, and =WORKDAY(TODAY(),30,H1:H20) also skips the holiday dates listed in H1:H20. =WORKDAY.INTL accepts other weekends, and =NETWORKDAYS(start, end) counts the business days between two dates, with both dates included. Note that last point: NETWORKDAYS counts the start date if it is a weekday, while “N business days from today” does not.
