About Canada’s public holidays
These are the general holidays of the Canada Labour Code, which apply to federally regulated employers (banks, airlines, telecoms and federal services). Each province sets the holidays for other workers, so provincial lists differ.
In 2026, 10 holiday days are listed; 1 of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday and are not moved. 5 are taken on a Monday or Friday, making a three-day weekend.
Weekends and substitute days
Canada Day moves to 2 July when 1 July is a Sunday (Holidays Act s.2(2)). Under CLC s.193(2), when New Year's Day, Canada Day, NDTR, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a non-working Saturday or Sunday the employee gets the working day immediately preceding or following.
Legal basis: Canada Labour Code s.166 and ss.191-197; Holidays Act; Interpretation Act s.35.
