How we compile holidays

Every date on these pages comes from a government source: the US Office of Personnel Management, GOV.UK, Justice Laws of Canada, the New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia governments, Citizens Information in Ireland, Employment New Zealand, the South African government, Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, GovHK, Japan’s Cabinet Office, Service-Public.fr and Spain’s official state gazette. Each date was checked against that source on 2 November 2026, and every rule-based date (an n-th weekday, an Easter offset, a substitute-day rule) was recomputed from its rule and compared, 702 comparisons in all.

Holidays that depend on a lunar calendar, an Islamic month, an astronomical event or a yearly proclamation (Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Japan’s equinox days, the King’s Birthday in Western Australia) are shown only once the government has announced them. For later years they are listed as “not yet announced” rather than guessed.

Public, bank, federal: what the words mean

A federal holiday in the United States is a day off for federal employees, set by 5 U.S.C. 6103; banks and many employers follow it, but private employers are not obliged to. A bank holiday in the UK is a day set under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 or by royal proclamation. Banks close, and most employers give the day off, but GOV.UK points out that employers do not have to give bank holidays as paid leave. Canada’s general holidays in the Labour Code apply to federally regulated employers, while each province sets the holidays of everyone else. In Australia every state and territory sets its own public holidays.

So “is it a holiday?” has two answers: whether the day is on the official list, and whether your employer gives it. These pages answer the first.

Questions

Is today a public holiday?
The box at the top of this page answers for the holiday set you choose (by default the one for your time zone): it says whether today is a public holiday and lists the next ones.
Do business days include holidays?
No. Business days are normally Monday to Friday excluding public holidays, so a five-day count that crosses a holiday ends a day later. Which days count depends on the country, and contracts and courts sometimes define their own calendars. The business days calculator can subtract the holidays of a country.
What is the difference between a public holiday and a bank holiday?
In the UK, “bank holiday” is the legal name for most public holidays: days set under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 or by royal proclamation, when banks close. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Good Friday and Christmas Day are holidays by common law instead. Elsewhere the names differ: federal holidays in the US, general holidays in Canada’s Labour Code and in Hong Kong, national holidays in Japan.
Why is the holiday on Monday when the date is a Sunday?
Many countries move a holiday that falls on a weekend to a weekday, so workers do not lose it. The rules differ: the US moves Saturday holidays to Friday and Sunday holidays to Monday; the UK gives a substitute weekday; France does not move them, and Ireland does not move the day itself: under the Organisation of Working Time Act the employee gets another paid day off, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day’s pay instead. The table on this page compares them.
Why is my country not listed?
We publish only holiday lists that we could check against the government’s own published source. For several large countries, including India, the Philippines, Mexico, Brazil and the Netherlands, we could not yet reach the official source, and for Germany the federal government sets only one holiday (German Unity Day) while the 16 states set the rest. We would rather leave a country out than guess.
