About Ireland’s public holidays
Ireland’s public holidays under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997. A public holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved; employees keep the benefit instead, as a paid day off, an extra day of annual leave or an extra day’s pay. St Brigid’s Day is the first Monday of February, unless 1 February is a Friday, when it is that Friday.
In 2026, 10 holiday days are listed; 1 of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday and are not moved. 7 are taken on a Monday or Friday, making a three-day weekend.
Weekends and substitute days
No automatic substitute day when a public holiday falls on a weekend; the employee keeps the public holiday benefit (paid day off, extra annual leave day, extra day's pay, or a paid day off within a month).
Legal basis: Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 (Schedule 2, as amended).
