About Christmas
Christmas Day is December 25 every year, so only its weekday moves: one day later in the week each year, two days later after a leap day. Between 2026 and 2035 it falls on a weekend in 2027, 2032 and 2033.
It is a public holiday in 16 of the 17 holiday sets we track, from the United States to Hong Kong and Singapore; Japan is the exception. When it falls on a weekend the day off moves, and each country moves it differently. In the United States, federal employees get the Friday before a Saturday holiday and the Monday after a Sunday one. In the UK, a weekend Christmas Day and Boxing Day are followed by substitute bank holidays on the next free weekdays: in 2027 that means Christmas Day (substitute day) on Mon, Dec 27 and Boxing Day (substitute day) on Tue, Dec 28.
The Julian calendar, still used by some churches for feast days, runs 13 days behind ours from 1900 to 2100, so December 25 in that calendar is January 7 in the Gregorian calendar.
Christmas Eve and the days around it
Christmas Eve, December 24, is not a federal holiday in the United States and not a bank holiday in the UK. In the official data we use, only Queensland makes part of it a public holiday (6 p.m. to midnight). Boxing Day, December 26, is a public holiday in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; Ireland has St Stephen’s Day, South Africa the Day of Goodwill, and Hong Kong gives the first weekday after Christmas. In years when Christmas falls on a Saturday, as in 2027, the US federal observance moves to Friday, December 24, so for many US workers “Christmas Eve” is the day off.
How the countdown works
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of Christmas in your time zone, so the day count drops by one at your midnight and reaches zero on the day itself. It uses your device’s time zone and our server-corrected clock, so it stays right even if your device clock is a few seconds off. The day after Christmas, the page moves on to the next year’s date by itself.
“Sleeps” is the number of nights left, the way children count: on the evening before the day it is one sleep.
