About Summer
Astronomical summer begins at the June solstice, a precise instant when the Sun reaches 90° of ecliptic longitude. In 2027 that instant is June 21 at 14:11 UTC. The countdown above runs to that moment and shows its date in your time zone, which can be a day earlier in the Americas when the instant falls in the first hours of the UTC day.
The June solstice falls on June 20 and June 21 in the coming ten years. It drifts by about six hours a year and jumps back after each leap day, which is what keeps it close to the same date. The times are the US Naval Observatory’s published times, to the minute, in UTC.
Meteorologists use whole months instead: meteorological summer starts on June 1, which makes seasonal statistics easier to compare. In the Southern Hemisphere the seasons are reversed: the June solstice begins winter in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina.
How the countdown works
The countdown runs to the exact instant of the event and shows its date in your time zone. It uses your device’s time zone and our server-corrected clock, so it stays right even if your device clock is a few seconds off. The day after Summer, the page moves on to the next year’s date by itself.
“Sleeps” is the number of nights left, the way children count: on the evening before the day it is one sleep.
