About Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, a lunar calendar of 12 months of 29 or 30 days. Its year has 354 or 355 days, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year and moves through all the seasons in about 33 years. The dates here come from the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, computed from its published month table.
For religious purposes many Muslims begin the month only when the new crescent is first seen after the new moon, and national authorities announce the start. The Umm al-Qura calendar itself says its dates may differ by a day from actual sighting in some countries. So treat the countdown as the expected start, and check the announcement where you live in the last days of Sha’ban.
The end of Ramadan is Eid al-Fitr, 1 Shawwal. Singapore’s official Hari Raya Puasa dates show how an announced date can differ from the computed one: March 21, 2026, where Umm al-Qura has March 20; March 10, 2027, where Umm al-Qura has March 9.
How the countdown works
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of Ramadan in your time zone, so the day count drops by one at your midnight and reaches zero on the day itself. It uses your device’s time zone and our server-corrected clock, so it stays right even if your device clock is a few seconds off. The day after Ramadan, the page moves on to the next year’s date by itself.
“Sleeps” is the number of nights left, the way children count: on the evening before the day it is one sleep.
