About Labor Day
US Labor Day is the first Monday of September, a federal holiday under 5 U.S.C. 6103. It therefore falls between September 1 and September 7 and always creates a three-day weekend. In 2027 it is September 6.
Canada’s Labour Day falls on the same day: the first Monday of September. Most other countries mark Labour Day on May 1, among them France, Singapore and Hong Kong in our holiday data, while Australia’s states and New Zealand set their own dates (New Zealand: the fourth Monday of October).
In the United States, Labor Day is often treated as the unofficial end of summer, although astronomical fall begins later, at the September equinox (days until fall).
How the countdown works
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of Labor Day in your time zone, so the day count drops by one at your midnight and reaches zero on the day itself. It uses your device’s time zone and our server-corrected clock, so it stays right even if your device clock is a few seconds off. The day after Labor Day, the page moves on to the next year’s date by itself.
“Sleeps” is the number of nights left, the way children count: on the evening before the day it is one sleep.
