About Thanksgiving
US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, a federal holiday under 5 U.S.C. 6103. Because it is tied to a weekday, its date moves between November 22 and November 28: in 2026 it is November 26, in 2027 November 25. It is never moved for a weekend, since it is always a Thursday.
Many employers and schools also give the Friday after, so the holiday often becomes a four-day weekend. That Friday is not a federal holiday.
Canada’s Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October (October 12 in 2026), a federal general holiday under the Canada Labour Code. If you are counting for Canada, use that date.
How the countdown works
