About New Year
The new year starts at midnight between December 31 and January 1 in each time zone. The countdown above runs to midnight in yours, and the hours and minutes count down with it, so it reaches zero exactly when your clock does.
The first inhabited places to reach the new year are in Kiribati’s Line Islands (Kiritimati), at UTC+14; the last are American Samoa and Niue, at UTC-11. Between them, the new year takes 25 hours to go around the world, and for a while two different years are in use on Earth at once.
New Year’s Day is a public holiday in every set we track. When it falls on a weekend, the US federal government observes it on the Friday before or the Monday after; January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027 — a federal holiday in 2027 that belongs to the 2028 New Year.
How the countdown works
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of New Year in your time zone, so the day count drops by one at your midnight and reaches zero on the day itself. It uses your device’s time zone and our server-corrected clock, so it stays right even if your device clock is a few seconds off. The day after New Year, the page moves on to the next year’s date by itself.
“Sleeps” is the number of nights left, the way children count: on the evening before the day it is one sleep.
