About Hong Kong’s public holidays

Hong Kong’s general holidays under the General Holidays Ordinance, published in the gazette each year. Several follow the Chinese lunar calendar. Every Sunday is a general holiday anyway, so when a holiday falls on a Sunday the next day that is not itself a holiday replaces it.

In 2026, 17 holiday days are listed; 3 of them fall on a Saturday or Sunday and are not moved, and 4 are taken on another day because the date falls on a weekend. 7 are taken on a Monday or Friday, making a three-day weekend.

Weekends and substitute days

When a general holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day (or next day that is not itself a general holiday) is designated in substitution, as stated in each year's gazette. Every Sunday is also a general holiday.

Legal basis: General Holidays Ordinance (Cap. 149), Schedule; annual gazette list.
