About New Zealand’s public holidays

New Zealand’s public holidays under the Holidays Act 2003, plus the regional anniversary days. Waitangi Day, Anzac Day and the Christmas and New Year holidays are “Mondayised” when they fall on a weekend, for employees who would not normally work that day.

In 2026, 11 holiday days are listed; 2 are taken on another day because the date falls on a weekend. 10 are taken on a Monday or Friday, making a three-day weekend.

Weekends and substitute days

Christmas, Boxing, New Year's and 2 January: if on Sat/Sun and the employee would not otherwise work that day, the holiday transfers to the following Monday (or Tuesday). Waitangi Day and Anzac Day are 'Mondayised' on the same condition.

Legal basis: Holidays Act 2003 ss.44-45A; Waitangi Day Act 1976; ANZAC Day Act 1966; Sovereign's Birthday Observance Act 1952; Te Kahui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022.
