Antarctica has 8 different clock settings under the current rules, from UTC−3 in Palmer to NZDT (UTC+13) in McMurdo. The clock at the top shows McMurdo on New Zealand Standard Time (NZST, UTC+12) in winter and New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT, UTC+13) in summer.
The IANA time zone database divides Antarctica into 10 zones. It needs more zones than there are clock settings because it also records history: two regions that keep the same time today get separate entries if their clocks differed at any point since 1970, which is why, for example, Antarctica/Palmer and Antarctica/Rothera are separate.
At UTC+13 in summer, Antarctica is among the first places on Earth to start each new day: only a handful of Pacific islands are further ahead of UTC.
Daylight saving time in Antarctica
Partly. Regions on Troll time and New Zealand Time change their clocks; Palmer (UTC−3), Syowa (UTC+3), Mawson (UTC+5), Davis (UTC+7), Casey (UTC+8) and DumontDUrville (UTC+10) stay on standard time all year.
In McMurdo clocks move forward one hour on the last Sunday of September at 2:00 AM and back on the first Sunday of April at 3:00 AM (local time). It is in the southern hemisphere, so summer time runs from about October to April, the opposite of Europe and North America.
