Time zone in Chile
Chile has 3 different clock settings under the current rules, from UTC−6 in Easter to UTC−3 in Punta Arenas. The clock at the top shows the capital, Santiago, on UTC−4 in winter and UTC−3 in summer.
The IANA time zone database divides Chile into 4 zones. It needs more zones than there are clock settings because it also records history: two regions that keep the same time today get separate entries if their clocks differed at any point since 1970, which is why, for example, America/Coyhaique and America/Punta_Arenas are separate.
Santiago lies at 70.6° west, where mean solar time is UTC−4:43 (four minutes per degree of longitude). Standard time runs 43 min ahead of the sun, so on average the sun is highest at about 12:43 PM in winter and an hour later in summer.
Daylight saving time in Chile
Partly. Regions on Easter time and Santiago time change their clocks; Punta Arenas (UTC−3) stays on standard time all year.
In Santiago clocks move forward one hour on the first Saturday of September at 12:00 PM and back on the first Saturday of April at 12:00 PM (local time). It is in the southern hemisphere, so summer time runs from about October to April, the opposite of Europe and North America.

Clock history of Chile
The record begins with local mean time (clocks set by the sun, UTC−4:43 in Santiago), which ended on December 31, 1889, when SMT (UTC−4:43) replaced it. Between 1970 and 2024, a daylight saving period began in 54 of the 55 years. The first summer time in the record dates from 1927. The table summarises the clocks of Santiago year by year since 1970, from the tzdata entry America/Santiago.
