Time zone in Ireland
Ireland uses a single time zone: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) in winter and Irish Standard Time (IST, UTC+1) in summer. Every clock in the country shows the same time.
In winter its clocks show UTC itself, the time scale every other zone is defined against; Ireland calls it Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Dublin lies at 6.2° west, where mean solar time is UTC−0:25 (four minutes per degree of longitude). Standard time runs 25 min ahead of the sun, so on average the sun is highest at about 12:25 PM in winter and an hour later in summer.
Daylight saving time in Ireland
Yes. Ireland moves its clocks forward one hour on the last Sunday of March at 1:00 AM and back on the last Sunday of October at 2:00 AM (local time).
Irish law treats the summer time, Irish Standard Time (UTC+1), as the standard time and the winter GMT as the exception, so tzdata records Ireland with a “negative” daylight saving time in winter. Your clock moves exactly as in the UK either way.
The dates come from EU Directive 2000/84/EC, which makes every member state change at the same instant, 1:00 a.m. GMT. The plan to end the changes has been stalled in the Council since 2019; the daylight saving time page explains it.
All coming change dates are on the Europe/Dublin page.
Clock history of Ireland
The record begins with local mean time (clocks set by the sun, UTC−0:25 in Dublin), which ended on August 2, 1880, when DMT (UTC−0:25) replaced it. Between 1970 and 2024, a daylight saving period began in 54 of the 55 years. The first summer time in the record dates from 1916. The table summarises the clocks of Ireland year by year since 1970, from the tzdata entry Europe/Dublin.
| Years | Clocks | Abbreviations |
|---|---|---|
| 1970 | UTC+1 all year | IST |
| 1971 | UTC+1 until October 31, then UTC+0 | IST, GMT |
| 1972 onward | UTC+0 in winter, UTC+1 in summer | GMT, IST |
Changes of the winter (standard) offset since 1970: Sunday, October 31, 1971, from UTC+1 to UTC+0.
Rows from 2027 on follow the rules in tzdata 2026f; a government decision would change them in the next release.
