Time zone in Portugal
Portugal has 2 different clock settings under the current rules, from UTC−1 in Azores to WEST (UTC+1) in Lisbon. The clock at the top shows the capital, Lisbon, on Western European Standard Time (WET, UTC+0) in winter and Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) in summer.
The IANA time zone database divides Portugal into 3 zones. It needs more zones than there are clock settings because it also records history: two regions that keep the same time today get separate entries if their clocks differed at any point since 1970, which is why, for example, Europe/Lisbon and Atlantic/Madeira are separate.
In winter its clocks show UTC itself, the time scale every other zone is defined against; Portugal calls it WET (UTC+0).
Lisbon lies at 9.1° west, where mean solar time is UTC−0:37 (four minutes per degree of longitude). Standard time runs 37 min ahead of the sun, so on average the sun is highest at about 12:37 PM in winter and an hour later in summer.
Daylight saving time in Portugal
In Lisbon clocks move forward one hour on the last Sunday of March at 1:00 AM and back on the last Sunday of October at 2:00 AM (local time).
The dates come from EU Directive 2000/84/EC, which makes every member state change at the same instant, 1:00 a.m. GMT. The plan to end the changes has been stalled in the Council since 2019; the daylight saving time page explains it.
All coming change dates are on the Europe/Lisbon page.
Clock history of Portugal
The record begins with local mean time (clocks set by the sun, UTC−0:37 in Lisbon), which ended on December 31, 1911, when WET (UTC+0) replaced it. Between 1970 and 2024, a daylight saving period began in 47 of the 55 years. The first summer time in the record dates from 1916. The table summarises the clocks of Lisbon year by year since 1970, from the tzdata entry Europe/Lisbon.
