Time zone in Australia

Australia has 7 different clock settings under the current rules (5 standard offsets; some regions share an offset but not the daylight saving rules), from AWST (UTC+8) in Perth to UTC+11 in Lord Howe. The clock at the top shows the capital, Canberra, on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST, UTC+10) in winter and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT, UTC+11) in summer.

The IANA time zone database divides Australia into 12 zones. It needs more zones than there are clock settings because it also records history: two regions that keep the same time today get separate entries if their clocks differed at any point since 1970, which is why, for example, Australia/Broken_Hill and Australia/Adelaide are separate.

Canberra lies at 149.1° east, where mean solar time is UTC+9:57 (four minutes per degree of longitude). That is within 3 min of its standard time, so the sun is highest close to noon in winter, and about 1:00 PM in summer.

Daylight saving time in Australia

Partly. Regions on Australian Central Time, Australian Eastern Time and Lord Howe time change their clocks; Perth (UTC+8), Eucla (UTC+8:45), Darwin (UTC+9:30) and Brisbane (UTC+10) stay on standard time all year.

In Canberra clocks move forward one hour on the first Sunday of October at 2:00 AM and back on the first Sunday of April at 3:00 AM (local time). It is in the southern hemisphere, so summer time runs from about October to April, the opposite of Europe and North America.

All coming change dates are on the Australia/Sydney page.

Clock history of Australia

The record begins with local mean time (clocks set by the sun, UTC+10:05 in Sydney), which ended on February 1, 1895, when AEST (UTC+10) replaced it. Between 1970 and 2024, a daylight saving period began in 54 of the 55 years. The first summer time in the record dates from 1916. The table summarises the clocks of Canberra year by year since 1970, from the tzdata entry Australia/Sydney.

Rows from 2027 on follow the rules in tzdata 2026f; a government decision would change them in the next release.
